Al Bergstein returned to talk
about
Collaborative Learning
and Education. Al's PowerPoint presentation is
available on our member's pages.
Al was our December speaker, and has been invited back to speak to
our group again. Al spent 11 years at Microsoft. He was hired on as manager of Network
Engineering, his team put TCP/IP on the MS network in 95/96, and he
then shifted to International Operations Manager for
Sidewalk, one of the first Arts and Entertainment web sites.
From there, he moved to the first Operations Manager
or
Expedia. Al's last years at MS
were as
Technical Evangelist for Data Center Server software vendors,
Mainframe Migration and doing executive briefings.
Al now lives
on the Olympic Peninsula, and runs the Olympic Peninsula
Environment News,
www.olyopen.net, his personal BLOG.
Collaborative learning is one of Al's passions, as he believes
that "...everything from gaming to doing business at the world's
largest companies is about collaboration, and with the emphasis on
carbon neutral
showing up in a huge number of ways (cost of gas,
environmental impact on travel, etc), it is going to be huge in the
coming decades. What are the hidden possibilities that a school
district, government, and the citizens of the Peninsula might
be able to find by focusing on how they better enable wide area
collaboration. The web here is only a baby step. The future holds a
much more interesting story. How do we get from here to there? What
will it cost? What are the possible reasons to do it? How do
"we" sell it to the population? What technology needs to happen to
really enable it? "

included a lot of material on spyware, viruses, recommended user
actions, etc. Links to his presentation, links to
recommended software, etc., appear on our
Member's
pages. Ryan's four year stint at OlyPen has so far included:
work in networking, PC repair, architecture design and research. His
specialties: Overclocking and PC Hardware. Personal interests
include PC gaming, hardware and software research, and encoding of
music and video. We expect to have Ryan back in a few months.

Official minutes from 14 April Meeting:
We
had a great meeting today chaired by Tom Pitre, SPCUG VP.
There was quite a full house of members along with several
new visitors. Lots of excitement as Tom presented the
members with a demo of the new software that handles the
choosing of our door prize winners. [The Hat -
available from:
http://www.programurl.com/the-hat.htm ] The
program shuffles the eligible member's names and a winner
was chosen. Today's winner was Charles Simonsen, who won
two door prizes. The first prize was converting software
for his iPod and the other a one gigabyte USB flash
drive. Charles definitely made out like a bandit today.
The software was given to Charles.
M˛Convert for iPod, was provided to the club by M˛
Software as one of our
sponsors. The software converts DVDs and
multimedia files from any supported format (including AVI,
ASF, WMV, MOV, MPG, MPEG, AVC, OGG, MP4, DivX, IFO, MP3,
WMA, WAV, AAC and more) to Apple iPod compatible format
using H.264 or MPEG-4 compression, with the option of
inserting them directly into your iTunes library.
Following was a short discussion on the Portable PC
Project. The membership voted on putting a cap of $500.00
on spending for this project. We will be giving further
reports as this project continues.
After we wrapped things up with membership business we
launched into Doug Nevill's demonstration of Microsoft
Publisher. Doug gave a wonderful outline of his
background, his business, and some of the ways we can use
Publisher. His presentation included a “cheat sheet”
[linked to, above] which shows some of the basic steps for
getting started with a publication. Doug walked us through
those steps using Publisher. He really gave a wonderful
overview and enough in-depth details to be able to start
creating some useful personal or business publications.
Several of the members expressed an interest in creating
greeting cards, so Doug walked us through the steps for
creating those. In addition he demonstrated more
sophisticated techniques such as using “mail merge” to
pull in data base information and creating multicolumn
newsletters using flowing text.
Following the presentation there was a question and answer
period regarding assorted issues that members have had
with MS Publisher and some generalized techniques for
handling Publisher projects.
The
meeting wrapped up with Jessica Burroughs handing out some
additional USB flash drives for those members who had
reserved them. Those who were not present to purchase
theirs can try again next month or contact her regarding
picking them up at a PC Posse meeting.
Rolland K. agreed to help anyone with Microsoft
Publisher as a volunteer to other paid members.

June
Meeting:
Larry
talked about the older routers and the transition to the newest
product, from a Cisco 678 (DMT) thru the ActionTec 1520/1524 to
ActionTec GT701WG and finally to their newest offering the 2-wire
2700HGV (I actually tried this on my long loop at home (28,000 feet) and it
trained up at the same line quality as my Actiontec 1520 and the
wireless portion gave me an extra bar-as compared to my Linksys
Wireless G router.)
He said Qwest has
doubled the subscribers to DSL from last year and they are installing
hundreds of remote
dslams
each month in their territory (14 states). He also said Qwest is using
an OC192 for their backbone (to the internet).
He talked about Qwest and their
VoIP offering and
something about MSN Live that Qwest will offer near the end of 2006.
Another thing that Qwest has on it's website is something called
"Quick Care" for remote troubleshooting, apparently some software you
can download for free. He talked about their all in one product
consisting of DirecTV ( >155 Channels ), HSI (DSL 1 M upload and 1.5 M
download and digital voice for $86.97. - S, Solberg, SPCUG

Another alternative is to use FOLDERLOCK. Grab a
free, trial copy at:
http://www.newsoftwares.net/folderlock/?id=rc
Folder Lock is a fast file-security program that can
password-protect, lock, hide and encrypt any number of files,
folders, drives, pictures and documents in seconds. Protected files
are hidden, undeletable, inaccessible and highly secure. It hides
files from kids, friends and co-workers, safeguards them from
viruses, trojans, worms and spyware, and even protects them from
networked PCs, cable users and hackers. Files can also be protected
on USB Flash Drives, Memory Sticks, CD-RW, floppies and notebooks.
Protection works even if files are taken from one PC to another on a
removable disk, without the need to install any software. It locks
files in Windows, DOS and even Safe Modes. Additional Options
include Stealth Mode, Hacker Attempt Monitoring, Shred files,
AutoLock, Auto Shutdown PC, Lock your PC, Erase PC tracks, 256-bit
Blowfish Encryption and Context Menu in Explorer. Works on Windows
2003/XP/2000/NT/Me/98 and all kinds of disk types like FAT16, FAT32,
NTFS. Folder Lock is the most downloaded file-security program in
the market today. Folder Lock is NOT
freeware! It’s shareware, which means 'try before you
buy'. We give you a 35-use trial so that you can test the program
and check whether it is useful for you or not. If you find it useful
and want to keep it for an unlimited number of times without any
kind of limitation, register your copy and get a full version
downloaded via email in minuteS. - tp, 17 June
*NOTE: You can encrypt files and folders only on volumes that use the
NTFS file system.
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then
click Windows Explorer.
2. Locate and right-click the folder that you want, and then click
Properties.
3. On the General tab, click Advanced.
4. Under Compress or Encrypt attributes, select the Encrypt contents
to secure data check box, and then click OK.
5. Click OK.
6. In the Confirm Attribute Changes dialog box that appears, use one
of the following steps:
• If you want to encrypt only the folder, click Apply changes to this
folder only, and then click OK.
• If you want to encrypt the existing folder contents along with the
folder, click Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files, and
then click OK.
The folder becomes an encrypted folder. New files that you create in
this folder are automatically encrypted. Note that this does not
prevent others from viewing the contents of the folder. This prevents
others from opening items in the encrypted folder. For example, if
another user attempts to open a Microsoft Word document that has been
created in the encrypted folder, the following message appears:
Word cannot open the document: Username does not have access
privileges
(drive:\filename.doc)
If another user attempts to copy or move a document from the encrypted
folder to another location on the hard disk, the following message
appears:
Error Copying File or Folder
Cannot copy Filename: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is
not currently in use.
Troubleshooting
• You cannot encrypt files or folders on a volume that uses the FAT
file system.
To resolve this issue, store the files or folders that you want to
encrypt on NTFS volumes.

How to get rid of Spyware:
http://www.download.com/Get-rid-of-spyware/1200-2023_4-5127994.html
Get the DLL out - Some spyware uses an ActiveX control to keep reinstalling itself.
Usually it's a DLL file, but sometimes the file ends in ocx. Until recently, we'd been
using regsrv32.exe to eliminate these files, but that requires that you know and can
correctly type the pathname for the miscreant. If you want to take this route, head to
the Start menu, initiate the Run command, and type regsvr32 /u full-filepath\yourdll.dll. The /u switch means un-register; to register a DLL, you just
leave those characters out. Try the Bazooka Spyware Scanner:
